My Mother's Handwriting

There is just something about my mother’s handwriting.

I could pick it out quicker than I could recognize my own. I’ve seen it in cards. I’ve seen it in guestbooks. I’ve seen it in lunchbox love notes. I’ve seen it on calendars and sign-in sheets. Wherever it is, it grabs me.

I recently discovered a gift bag full of cards I’ve been hoarding because I have a sickness and decided to go through them just to make sure there were no unclaimed birthday checks in need of cashing (there were none so I apologize to those of you who do not receive Christmas gifts from the Faughts this year). I saw a card from my parents and found myself tracing the letters my mother had written. “We love you with all our hearts, Mom & Dad.” They were perfect, peaceful, comforting letters that only my mom could make. The sentiment was sweet, but it’s her penmanship that captures me every time. Even if she is only addressing an envelope to mail me the latest issue of the Wacoan (because she fully understands I need to read everything written about Chip and Joanna), I know her thoughts are only on me when she puts that pen to paper. There is a closeness felt when I read the words she wrote just for me.

The same can be said when I read the Word of God. His thoughts were on me. His thoughts were on you. Let that sink in.

"'If you'll hold on to me for dear life,' says God, 'I'll get you out of any trouble. I'll give you the best of care if you'll only get to know and trust me. Call me and I'll answer, be at your side in bad times; I'll rescue you, then throw you a party. I'll give you a long life, give you a long drink of salvation!'" -Psalm 91:14

His thoughts were on you.

"'I have it all planned out-plans to take care of you, not abandon you, plans to give you the future you hope for. When you call on me, when you come and pray to me, I'll listen." -Jeremiah 29:11-12

His thoughts were on you.

"'I've picked you. I haven't dropped you. Don't panic. I'm with you. There's no need to fear for I'm your God. I'll give you strength. I'll help you. I'll hold you steady, keep a firm grip on you.'" -Isaiah 41:10

His thoughts were on you.

I have recently begun hand writing little notes to Pemberley and Ewing on a regular basis. I write to them about funny things they’ve done, moments I’ve been overwhelmed with pride for them, absurd reasons they’ve thrown fits, etc. I hope they find humor in our silly days. I hope they find encouragement when they experience trials. Most of all, I pray my children find comfort in my nearness when they read them. I want them to see love in my chicken scratch.

What are some creative ways you communicate love to your children? Let me hear your ideas in the comments below!

  1. I got a little teary. I feel the same way about my mom. I've kept a journal for each of our children. G's began when I found out I was pregnant. N's began when we began trying. I can't wait to give them these someday. They will see from the very start, just how loved and wanted they were. Not to mention what little stinkers they can be.

  2. Love this so so much! I so want to start writing to my little guys.
And amen for His thoughts being on me!

  3. That was beautiful. I encourage you to hold onto those card/letters from your mama. I also encourage you to watch for the change that will occur in that handwriting as she ages. It is beautiful and bittersweet. It is so sweet that you are wanting to write little things to your children. They will look back on your handwriting one day. God bless you.
